One of the most exciting features of ICQ, is its ability to send and receive SMS messages.
SMS is short for Short Messages Service,
which is a way for cellular telephones and other devices to exchange messages.
Short ones, that is. ICQ contains built-in connectivity to many cellular networks, so that you
can send messages to a cellular telephone with the same ease and simplicity of sending an ICQ message.
Moreover, telephones which are on a GSM network can reply directly to your ICQ, and the message will arrive just like
a regular ICQ message. Sending an SMS Receiving an SMS Assigning an SMS number to a contact Using the System menu as an SMS center Sending an SMS ![]() Choosing 'Send SMS' opens the Send SMS window. In this window you can enter the text (up to 160 characters) and select the number of the device to which you are sending. The SMS number selection menu ![]() Other commands include removing, editing and adding SMS numbers. When you select Add or Edit, the following dialog is opened: ![]() Aside from the number fields, note that you can assign a nickname to each SMS number. This helps you easily identify the SMS recipients that appear in the popup menu on the Send SMS window. Receiving an SMS Reading an incoming SMS message works just like receiving a regular ICQ message. When a SMS is received by ICQ, a special icon will flash on the contact that is associated with the number from which the SMS has been sent. If no such contact exists, the icon will flash on the System user. Double clicking the contact (or selecting the contact and hitting 'enter') will open the message. Assigning a SMS number to a contact When you receive a SMS message, ICQ tries to find a contact on your list with a SMS number that matches the number from which the message has been sent. If not such number is found, the message is associated with the System user. When you open an incoming SMS message, a menu at the bottom of the window allows you to assign this number to any of your contacts, or the system user. Using the System user as your SMS center Some of the people with whom you communicate via SMS, may not be on the ICQ network. In order to easily access their SMS number, ICQ allows you to assign SMS numbers to the System user. Simply select the system user on your Contact List, choose 'Send SMS', and add the number using the mechanism described above. This number will remain on the System's SMS list for future usage. |
